This is a2 liter soda bottlethat has been running for several weeks prior to shipment - a cycled mini culture. This isn't an auction for thousands of daphnia, but a 'cycled' culture. It sounds good starting with thousands. However, did you know at high densities, such as placing thousands in a bag for shipment, theyrevert from having live young to laying eggs? Also, is it wise to place thousands of unimmunized humans into a sealed bag for several days? For a pond, thousandsare great, but for an aquarium/bucket culture, start with something healthy and productive. Actually, it matters little how many you start with, as daphnia multiply so quickly, by the time the new culture cycles its harvestable. My point - start with something healthy & productive.

This is daphnia pulex, the most common daphnia in the world. They are large enough to feed an adult angelfish. I culture pulex as they are the most reliable and prolific. I like pulex as they do well at high densities, much better than daphnia magna. This mini-culture will also contain copepods, which don't require any attention.

Transitioning daphnia to different wateris a time when you risk loosing them. When you receive the culture, pull out a few daphnia, place in yourwater, and see if they transition over 24 hours. If they don'ttransition you still have this mini-culture to continueharvesting from, and if they douse this mini culture as your backup.

When you receivethecultureall you need to do is put a florescent light on it, and its the light energy that feeds algae & bacteria the daphnia feed upon. This mini-culture will happily live foryears, serving as your first dose of daphnia, and then as a backup.
Please view my daphnia culturing video on my Facebook page. It is a bit 'all over the place', but it shows what you are receiving, and offers a few pointers.I have kept daphnia for years, and cultured many different ways. How do I recommend you start a culture? What would I do?

Being a 10 gallon is common, and a decent sized small culture, lets start with it. Take these steps:

1)Fill the tank with the water from a healthy tank that hasn't had a medication in a very long time, and hasn't had a water changein several weeks.
2)Siphon the bottom of the healthy tank, and collect enough mulm to lightly powder the culture tank bottom.
3) Add a few pond snails.
4)Add a live plant. I find frogbit, salvania, anacaris, and duckweedare good varieties.
5) Create a small mound of natural gravel.
6) Add an airstone with a faint stream of bubbles.
7) Add astrongflorescent light for at least 18 hours.
8) Keep between 60 and 75 degrees. My cultures are on the lower side in the winter, and higher in summer months.
9) If you use nicely aged water you can add daphnia immediately. If tap water was recently added, depending where you live, letcycle forup to a couple weeks before adding daphnia.

If you are new to daphnia don't heat or feed the culture until you have some success. The florescent light provides energy to the culture, so it doesn't need to be fed.

This is an easystrain I culture both outside and in my garage under florescent light. I have hada two liter bottle, as my backup, going forone year. It sits in agarage window that receivesfiltered morninglight.
