Description

Daphnia and Amphipod Combo Starter Culture

This auction is for a start culture of a hardy strain of daphnia (200+ individuals) and about 30 amphipods. These two species will not only coexist, they'll benefit each other. They both make excellent food for aquarium fish and aquatic amphibians.

Daphnia

Originally sold to me as Russian Reds, these are extremely hardy! Most daphnia die when placed in freshly dechlorinated tap water, but amazingly these don't mind it, although I can't guarantee that they'll react the same way to your water conditions. Water from an established, hydra-free aquarium is safest. This strain is on the larger side, and is very prolific.

Amphipods

These are probably Hyalella azteca. They are extremely resilient creatures as well, and their activity instantly attracts almost any fish. African dwarf frogs love them, too. If they find themselves in an aquarium where there is nothing large enough to eat them--like in a shrimp-only tank--their population will explode.

Food

The food is a shipped as a dry mix of various grain/bean flours and some Spirulina powder. The daphnia eat the fine suspended particles, while the amphipods eat the coarser pieces. I mix 1-3 teaspoons with about 4 oz. of water, and keep it in the refrigerator. An established culture gets a eyedropperful or two every day or so. When just starting out, add just a few drops per day until you know it will all be eaten.

You may also find some copepods and/or very small seed shrimp in your culture. These species are also excellent food, but are only likely to attract fish on the smaller side.

The culture and food are $12.00 + $10.00 priority shipping for a total of $22.00 shipped. During hot and cold seasons, I will ship the culture in a polystyrene-lined box. I will also add a heat pack for free when temperatures require it.
