Description

This listing is for a starter culture of 50-100 Daphnia Magna. I will also include a small starter of Spirulina algae that should last you several weeks. I do not include instructions in my packaging as I am providing them here.

Larger cultures are available here on Aquabid for a larger price of course but if set up correctly, these cultures multiply exponentially so in reality there is no need to buy a huge culture unless your intent is to feed your fish immediately. Set up correctly, you will be able to feed from this starter culture with 2-4 weeks time and in the process save big $$$ compared to the larger cultures. This is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at raising this amazing live food at a low starting cost.

Daphnia magna is the species normally associated with the name Daphnia by most aquarists. It has been a favorite live food source since the hobby began. Daphnia are one of the finest and most universally accepted live foods for most fish. Many fish species can be kept in excellent physical condition by feeding live daphnia to them several times per week. Daphnia are extremely effective at bringing many fish into spawning condition. Daphnia cultured in your own home also can be considered cleaner and probably more parasite and disease free compared to frozen or live foods collected from various questionable and contaminated habitats.

D. magna males are 2 mm in length and females are 3-5 mm. They range in color from a pale yellow to salmon-pink, often this is affected by their food source. D. magna has a wide temperature tolerance, but its optimum temperature is between 64-72F. At temperatures above 75 degrees, Daphnia magna begins to slow in production. Cultures will survive at warmer temperatures but do not expect them to reproduce as rapidly.

Daphnia are undemanding in terms of what you culture them in. Please ensure the container made of a material that won't dissolve in water, and/or leech chemicals into the water. If you use a metal container, stainless steel is the safest because many metals will react slowly with water over time. It is desirable to have as high a surface area to volume ratio as possible to ensure that there is good gaseous exchange. If you're keeping the "tank" outside in strong sunlight or with heavy illumination around, it is a good idea to use a container larger than 10 gallons as the water temperature will fluctuate less, thus providing greater stability for the culture. For someone who only wants a modest amount of Daphnia per week, cultures can be maintained in two litre bottles. A glass aquarium is a great container as it makes it easy to monitor the culture and feed levels.

Daphnia cultures can be fed one or several of the following feeds;
Spirulina algae (available through aquaculture supply companies and health food stores)
Chlorella algae (available at health food stores)
Green water
Active bakers yeast (available from wholesale bakery supply stores)
Whole wheat flour (from a bulk food store)
The ideal level to feed the daphnia should be enough to cloud the tank up to slightly noticeable opacity. One day later, that same water should be crystal clear. If the water clears up sooner than one day, too little is fed. If the water is still very cloudy the next day too much has been fed. So adjust quantities accordingly.

Regular water changes need to be performed on daphnia tanks as well as fish tanks. The bare minimum that a daphnia tank, at full production, should be changed is two 25% water changes per week. If water changes are done more frequent than this, it is possible to see an increase in production. Water changes on daphnia tanks can be performed by siphoning water using a fine screen to cover the intake end of the siphon. Be sure to shake off any daphnia adhering to this screen before the screen is withdrawn from the tank. Alternately, you may combine the water change with harvesting by siphoning off the tank into a very fine mesh screen or net. Feeding the daphnia collected during the water change to your fish.

Aged, dechlorinated tap water is needed for daphnia cultures just like for fish. Chlorine will be rapidly lethal to daphnia so you must dechlorinate or age tap water before it is used on the daphnia culture. Water froman established fish tank with regular maintenance done is perfect as long as that tank is not treated with medications or fertilizers.

Daphnia need moderate aeration. Daphnia should not be collecting or grouping up near the water surface or close to lights, etc. If they are doing this there is not enough water aeration. Moderately strong aeration is necessary to keep the daphnia feed in suspension. Microscopic food particles need to be kept in suspension for the daphnia to feed. If the food is settling before the daphnia can eat it, it will just pollute your tank. Some people wanr against using airstones as the ultra fine bubbles cause problems for the daphnia. I find that a standard sponge filter without an airstone works perfectly.

I ship on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and shipments generally take 3-4 days. My live arrival guarantee only applies if your temperature on the day of delivery is between 30-93 degrees Fahrenheit according to weather.com. If your temperature is predicted to be hotter than 93 degrees or cooler than 30 degrees, please wait till your weather adjusts or you waive the live arrival guarantee. I reserve the right to delay shipment due to extreme weather conditions. I will ship as soon as possible after the temperatures come mellow out. Another option is to have the package held at your post office for you to pick up. This option will cost $4.00 more. This policy is for the well being of the creatures you are buying. Thank you for your understanding.
