This auction includes three large one ounce +++ starter cultures of nematode worms widely cultured and used for decades as a first food for fry too small to accept baby brine shrimp and as a supplement to baby brine shrimp.

The walter worm is much smaller (about half the size ) than its cousin the microworm Panagrellus redivivus, and serves as a perfect first food for the very smallest of fry.  Banana worms are a relatively new worm similar to the walter worms and apparently more prolific.  After a few days of walter or banana worms, fry are able to progress to microworms and then 'over the hump' to newly hatched brine shrimp or even better decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, which are included in this package.  Even livebearers and newly hatched larger fry like cichlids will benefit immensely from a few days to a couple weeks of walter/banana and micro worms. Pictured below are female and male P. redivivus, respectively.

Walter worms were first isolated and cultured by Helmut Walter of Germany in 2002, and were introduced to California aquarists when he visited there that same year.

All three of these nematode worms thrive in a simple culture medium of oatmeal enriched with a small sprinkle of active baker's yeast - supplied with your starters.

Room temperature up to about 85o F is acceptable, and the worms throw 60 or so young from the their 4th day on. There will ALWAYS be enough worms on hand for all the fry you can produce. Within literally days of starting your cultures with our large starter portions you will see the surface of your cultures shimmering with millions of worms.

Walter worms can stay alive in the tank for 24 hours or more and float in the water column longer than their larger cousins which gives your fry longer to find them. (As shown here when some aquarists suspended equal amounts in two cylinders and timed their settling)

All I can find out about the banana worms at this point is that they are related nematodes, seem to be about the same size or slightly larger than the walter worms, and appear to be even more prolific than the walter worms - if that is possible! They simply reproduce at a phenomenal rate. I would love to hear from anyone who can come up with more on their origin, but in the meantime they are a super source of live food for the smallest fry up to about 1/4".

The micro worm cultures offered here are an extremely prolific and fast growing strain.  They also are very simply cultured with oatmeal and a pinch of yeast. The photos below were taken quite awhile back on the 15th of July of cultures that were started on the 7th from only a teaspoon of starter. The lid of the culture container literally has thick strands of micro worms woven on its underside! This is one incredibly prolific and fast strain that I have kept hardy by outcrossing with unrelated strains on a regular basis.

You also receive (15) of our best selling 7ml pipettes.

These heavy duty - and most importantly wide barreled - six inch long pipettes are graduated in 1/2 ml increments up the 3ml stem and hold a total of 7ml.  They have multiple uses in any fish room or breeding setup. They will come in handy for dispensing medications, transferring fry and eggs (just snip the tip wider with a pair of scissors), delivering small foods right to the fry that need them without spreading them all over the tank, and a whole host of other applications.

AND............We're not done yet!  You receive 30 grams (one ounce plus) of USA Great Salt Lake decapsulated brine shrimp eggs.

I'm currently using a larger zip-lok bag so it will not appear to be as full, but will contain the same amount of this great fry food.  These eggs are non-hatching, eliminating the need for messy and uncertain hatcheries, and are fed directly from the bag.  A great many professional breeders and hobbyists have switched to these egss as 100% are used, and they are actually more nutritious than baby brine shrimp because the entire yolk sac and embryo are intact and not consumed by the hatching process.  They are also completely sterile due to the decap process that removes the outer shell, and will eliminate fry losses due to intestinal blockage caused by ingesting egg shells.

You also get complete and very detailed culturing instructions and my own guidelines for fry rearing and feeding, sent in an email at the time of your auction win/purchase so you'll have adequate time to prepare for the arrival of your cultures.

Your purchase price includes free First Class Mail shipping anywhere in the 50 United States and Puerto Rico.  Auction winners will get the PayPal and snail mail payment addresses on the close of the auction.

We prefer PayPal for payment, but personal checks and US postal money orders are OK as well.

Unfortunately we no longer ship this item outside the US and Puerto Rico.

Thanks For Looking And Take Care!
