These professionally made cultures will produce between a thousand and two thousand flies within a 5-6 week period. Our product has been developed over the last several years to yield a high volume of flies without crashing or developing foul odors or molds. We also employ a no tolerance policy towards mites. We do not sell cultures with mite infestations. Many fruit fly sellers DO have mite infestations. It is time consuming but we do what we have to do to provide clean cultures.

Fruit fly cultures consist of food(media) contained inside a breathable insect container. The flies lay their eggs on or near the food. When the eggs hatch, they are then called larvae. They would best be described as small white worms at this stage. The larvae eat the media for several days. When they reach the proper point in development, they will crawl out of the media in search of a dry spot on the side of the container. There they will pupate. This process is very similar to that of a caterpillar forming a chrysalis. They appear like grains of brown rice at this stage. Inside the pupae the larvae metamorphasize into their adult form--a fruit fly. The adult fly then continues to feed on the micro-organisms present in the culture. The initial hatching of adult flies will happen anywhere from 9-14 days after the initial set-up of the culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Fish Eat Fruit Flies?

Yes! Most top and middle feeding aquarium fish love fruit flies. Our fish get very excited and frantic when we add fruit flies to their tank. Fruit flies also provide fiber and enjoyment that is sometimes lacking in commercial dry foods.

How do you get the flies out of the container and into the fish tank?

First you tap the fly container against a solid surface to knock all the flies to the bottom. Once the flies are on the bottom of their container take the lid off quickly. Tap the container over the lip of the aquarium as the flies crawl out of the container. When you are done tap the container again to knock all of the flies to the bottom and quickly put the lid back on. It does take a little practice, but after awhile you will become adept at the exchange.

What is the difference between the three types of flies? And which one is best for fish?

Hydei are the largest variety. They are best for most fish over two inches. They are moderately difficult to culture and easy to handle. Wingless fruit flies are the easiest to handle. They are the smallest of the three varieties. They are easy to culture. Winged-flightless are the most difficult to handle. They are extremely easy to culture and are profligate producers. Winged-flightless is the best choice for home culturing.
