Description

Scud shrimp (small-type) 50 1/2 inch adults/fry -- live food for fish sold in lots of 50 adults with some juveniles. Scuds are a type of freshwater shrimp that we have living with our fish in the outdoor ponds. Another name for this shrimp is a sideswimmer as they always appear on their sides. This is a small local variety of shrimp -- probably not the larger Gammarus -- these guys are probably Hyalella -- they are too small (under 5 mm) for jambalaya -- but they turn orange when cooked or otherwise expire -- larger fish like them. Hyalella can survive in a much broader range of water chemistry conditions. There are over 800 species worldwide and my learning disabilities prohibit me from learning them all. We have had several requests for them locally so we have put them up on Aquabid. We are selling them as live fish food for feeding or culturing -- some fly fishermen make fly fishing lures with bigger ones and perhaps these guys -- don't ask me how. As can be seen in the pictures and video, they are in with guppy fry and with them but not visible (too small) are some type of hard-shell daphnia -- looking like tiny dots. This species of daphnia is not eaten by most fish for some reason -- probably something to do with the shell -- and these are not our Russian Reds (all fish appear to eat the reds). There are no other contaminint crustaceans other than the hard-shell daphnia. Some websites say that the gammarus are carnivorous but possibly only to other shrimp and normal daphnia?? We have never had any problem with them since they are probably the smaller species of scuds (hyalella). Here is a link to a webpage with some info and pics on the scuds: info and pics on scuds
Propagation: We do not do anything special to propagate the scuds. They are in a 300 gallon tub with fancy guppies and all we feed are HBH basic flakes (available in bulk from us). We have a floating island of bacopa plant in the middle of the tub and every 2 or 3 days I use a bowl to scoop out guppy fry. The bowl is pushed into the water as I suck up a target-rich area. There are usually more scuds in the bowl than fry. We usually ship out on Tuesdays. Shipping cost is 10.40, priority mail for up to 100 snails. Live arrival guaranteed only with Express mail, FedX next day or air cargo (Southwest). For non-alive-arrival claims a picture of the fish in the unopened bag within 48 hours is required.
