About Handcrafted Tropicals

Background
I started raising fish at age 8 (now 49) and have bred species from just about every family and owned a retail store '76-'80 in Ames IA, where I had the good fortune to know and learn from fish genetic legend Dr. Joanne Norton at the time she was establishing angelfish genetics and through the local club, learned a bit from Dr. Gene Lucas of betta fame. During my shop ownership period, created my own lines of Plumetail Platies, new at that time, from Norton stock; developed tank level production of Congo tetras, rare at the time, and wholesale distribution as well as large production of cory cats. I'm a believer in tank raised vs wild caught whenever possible and have always strived to provide TR in hard to get species when possible and to raise vigorous, viable stock. Member of IBC, TAS, ALA, AKA, ACA and local clubs. Contact Mark Schmidt at

After several years out of mainstream breeding (raising kids instead) I came back in 2002 to find that of all things, guppies and angelfish were some of the hardest to find fish in the current trade. Based in Chicagoland at that time, I raised and sold through Aquabid 500+ quality show guppies of 20+ varieties a month through 2004, then moved my operation to hometown Cedar Rapids IA, restarted / expanded with angelfish first, guppies restart pending, cory cats, dwarf plecos, SA and African dwarf cichilids and some killies varieties pending
