How I Do Business
Most of the plants and fish I sell are imported from collectors and/or breeders. All fish are held in quarantine prior to shipping. The fish are medicated with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals' General Cure, which contains metronidazole, and will cure flukes and most worms (the usual problems with both wild and tankraised fish). I also use Pimafix and Melafix when there's a reason to do so. I occasionally use praziquontel, which is also effective on worms, when I believe I need a stronger dewormer. All fish are eating both live and prepared foods (I feed frozen, pellet and flake) prior to shipout (with the exception of the occasional strictly predatory fish that won't take prepared food). I'm in the hobby/industry for the long term and would rather create a longterm relationship than make a short-term buck on a quick sale. If I'm not confident that a fish will do well, I won't sell it.
A Bit About Me
I've been a hobbyist for over 40 years. I've been fortunate enough to be able to make a living from my hobby for most of the past 28 years. I've owned an aquarium shop, a small saltwater wholesale company and several aquarium maintenance companies. I've been involved in store management for several of the big box chains and have also served as the warehouse manager for a freshwater and marine importer/wholesaler. Anubias Design is an aquarium/terrarium design, installation and maintenance company serving the greater Philadelphia area. I've been active in the organized part of the hobby since 1984, and have held almost every possible position in the various aquarium societies of which I've been a member. I'm a well-known speaker and judge, and have had the opportunity to lecture to aquarium societies in 9 states, including several regional and national conventions. I have approximately 15 different programs, a number of which have versions that I also give at schools. My program list includes: Aquarium Plants, Aquascaping, Water Gardens, How to Show Fish, Native Fish of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Wild Bettas and Other Anabantoids, A Week on the Peruvian Amazon, Aquarium Filtration, Introduction to Marine Aquariums, Fishes of the Coral Reef, Marine Invertebrates, Fishes for the Reef Aquarium, Angels Butterflies & Tangs, and a number of other marine talks.
