Description

Several months ago I was able to acquire 2 gravid, adult spotted green swordtail females from a local contact. This strain of spotted green swordtails has been in Western NY for many years. Pete Mang used to maintain them at least several years ago. He may have been the guy who introduced them here. The photo of the male is his, used with his permission. The photo of the female is mine. Obviously he's a much better photographer than I am. I'm not a huge fan of working with swordtails because when the males start to sex-out they are pretty quarrelsome among themselves. I've kept this strain before. Even the females are quarrelsome among themselves. When I saw a tank of these swords recently they were eye-catching. The male was close to 6" with tail and the females were over 3". They are chunky fish. I had a couple larger tanks available and decided to try them again. I was able to acquire 2 young, large, gravid females(one of the females is pictured). I was able to take a drop of fry from each female. The young are just starting to gain spots but are not sexable. I'm going to keep a dozen young for myself and move the rest. This auction is for 10 of the fry(about a 1/4" or larger) and 1 of the original gravid females I was able to acquire. Both females are about ready to drop another batch of fry. I will send whichever female hasn't yet dropped at the time the auction closes. Note, they are ravenous fry eaters. I loaded a 5 gallon with yarn mops and was able to get about 2 dozen fry from each female. The females were too large to comfortably fit in any of the breeding trap I have. I'll also include some plants: java fern, and heudelotii bolbitis. They grow great in my hard Lake Erie tap water with moderate lighting and no fertilizers. Thanks for looking. I ship on Monday and Tuesday only. Shipping is $15 on top of the winning auction bid. It includes an insulated box and appropriate heat packs to get the fish to you in excellent condition. Shipping is non-refundable. Since I prepare the fish for shipping when the auction closes, please be prepared to pay promptly when the auction does close. Thanks for looking.
