Description

The Ferocious water bug (Abedus sp.) is in the family of giant water bugs. The species I collect is not a true giant though. Those, members of Lethocerus, can grow to the size of your hand. The species that I sell maxes out at about 2cm. These are true bugs (hemipterans), not insects. Abedus loves to eat small snails and will eat 1 every day if provided for. It is strange and interesting to see a nymph sipping snail out of its shell as if the shell were a little coconut. They drop the shells when they're done. I will send you a squadron of 20 individuals, most of which are about 5mm long (nymphs). I will include a few adults as well (15-20mm). You can actually specify what size ratio you want in a message. I collect from freshwater and brackish habitat and they thrive immediately to freshwater (no discernible process of acclimation). The nymphs can be handled without fear of being bitten and the adults should be handled with some caution. I have never been bitten and the bites are said to result in a short painful spell. Note: there is always that chance that you are allergic and do not know it yet. Note: that allergy risk pertains to just about everything, including food and medicine. They cannot fly or climb glass. They should have still or slow-moving water. They do not typically attack fry. I house them with fry and they prefer the snails. Every once in a while, there will be an individual who does seize a small fish if it is slow enough. I do hope that this sells, I like keeping them in my tanks with other stock that I sell and it would be nice to introduce these animals to more people. I have sent 6 shipments previously, they travel well and have been well-received by invert. enthusiasts. Please partake and enjoy.
