Description

This auction is for 4 Red Head Tapas with free shipping. The Red Head Tapas (Geophagus) is hard to find in the hobby. It has gold to blue/ turquoise green patterns on their body and orange-red marking on their near translucent fins. When young they have a pronounced black spot on each side of their body. These belong to the family of "eartheaters" and this variety is very peaceful. They can be place with most any other tank mate and thrive in a community tank. They should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more. They are called "eartheaters due to their method of feeding in which they take mouthfuls of sand or gravel and sift them for edible items. You will need to provide a good substrate for their well-being. It has been my experience that these fish will not uproot plants but will continually keep the top layer of the gravel/sand turned over and clean! They have a remarkable/unusual way of breeding. The eggs are laid on a flat rock I use Italian river rocks that are black. After 24 hours, the eggs are covered with sand after another 24 hours the eggs are taken up in the mouths of both the male and female. These fish are delayed mouth brooders and are bi-paternal mouth brooders with both parents holding and caring for the young. After the young hatch, I have seen the parents spit them out on the sand one will watch the larva while the other parent feeds. After both parents feed the larva are taken up in the mouths again. After about a week they are let out and both parents protect them, if the fry get scared the run into their parents mouths. My pair is about 4 and they are breeding in a 55-gallon tank that has about a dozen Rainbow fish In it as well as a few small Discus. I have never seen the pair being aggressive I would recommend them as a community tank fish. Any questions email or call me.
