Description

Live Vinegar eel in porridge (oatmeal) starter culture - 3oz

3oz volume of wet oatmeal teeming with live Vinegar eels : Turbatrix aceti .

Vinegar eels are an excellent live food for fish fry and small fish. They are tiny nematode worms ranging in size from less than 1 to 2 mm in length.
They can live submerged in water (or vinegar) indefinately, and will swim at all levels in the water column. My worms are cultured using the vinegar porridge technique which allows for easy harvisting, similar to microworms. you may also use this starter with pure apple cider vinegar for a normal vinegar eel culture.
You will receive 3 ounces of mature culture to use as a starter for your own cultures.

Culturing (porridge technique):
1) use a small round plastic or glass container with lid, such as a cleaned whip cream, sour cream, or butter tub.
punch 3 or 4 small holes in the lid and plug them with sponge or filter floss (to let some air in but keep bugs out)
2) add about one inch of instant oatmeal and a 50/50 mix of water and apple cider vinigar: enough float the oatmeal.
3) microwave for one minute (to sterilize the oatmeal and container, and cook the oatmeal).
the oatmeal should be slightly runny, like pudding. add more vinegar if too firm.
4) allow to cool to room temperature.
5) and add 1-2 tsp of (still good) old culture or starter culture.
6) put the lid on it, set it on a shelf that isn't in the sun, and allow it to grow for 1 week before starting to harvest.

DONE!) after a few weeks you may need to stir the culture. at 4-8 weeks, when production slows, use it to start a new culture and discard the old one.
I recommend you keep at least 2 cultures always going, to provide a backup if one goes bad.
Note: your first culture and occasionaly with new cultures there will often be a "mould/carpet stage" for the first week or so. this is normal and fine, just stirr it every few days untill it stops happening.

Harvesting:
you can harvest every day if you need to. Even multiple times per day.
when the culture matures the worms will crawl up the side of the container.
Harvest them by gently swabbing them off the side wall of the container (use your finger, a small spatula, etc) and then rinse the harvested worms off into your fish tanks.

All livestock has been bred and raised in my fish room. No fresh imports, and none of the "bonus" pests and diseases that come with fresh imports.
