ENCHYTRAEUS ALBIDUS(white worm):
Receive a USPS priority box(5-3/8 x 8-5/8 1-5/8) filled with established culture. The medium is from a culture several months old and will contain 100s of worms & eggs. This is a temperate strain that has been kept at room temperature approaching two decades.

Most folks that struggle starting a white worm culture do so because the worms can act negatively when introduced to fresh medium. This culture will have been cycled for several months and its worms will be productive the day you receive it. Place this into a container for an instant & harvestsable culture.

CULTURING WHITE WORMS:
I have decades of experience with this worm and have kept this particular strain approaching two decades. Over the years I have cultured most everything with white worms & daphnia being my favorites. Why? White worms happen to be one of the most productive organisms on the planet, are productive year round, few things are as high in protein, can be gut-loaded with foods that are nutritious for your fish, and will survive in a fish tank for weeks.

Medium:
Most soil, peat, coco fiber, and commercial beddings work fine. We use coco fiber but don't recommend it over other products.

Medium depth should be at least a couple inches. White worms are borderline semi-aquatic and enjoy their medium from damp to soggy.

Food:
Feed like any other composting worm. On the menu is bread, cereal, rice, potato, and fruits & vegetables. Keep it soft & wet or the worms struggle consuming it.

Temperature:
We get asked about this topic more than any other, so will explain ideal white worm temperatures in greater detail.

There is a lot of misleading information suggesting white worms require the chilly temperature of 62 degrees. Enchytraeus albidus is a species complex(many similar & closely related species), so there is no ideal temperature. Though this worm can be found in chilly locations, it also ranges as far south as Virginia. In addition, some of these strains have been in the hobby for decades- such as this one, allowing them to further adapt to our home environments. The 62-degree figure so often mentioned is perpetuated by ill-informed aquarists referencing each other over the years.

My cultures reside in the garage. During the summer months my cultures frequently reach the low 80s. I have kept this strain like this for nearly 20 years and harvest year-round.

Here is a fact demonstrating the robustness of this strain. During the Summer of 2021 my area experienced the hottest Summer recorded. We set an all-time high of 111 degrees, with our cultures approaching 90 degrees that day. Though the worms were stressed, not one culture perished.

My best advice, when it comes to ideal temperature- keep them at whatever temperatures they were previously kept in. It is as simple as that!!!

Most of this country has ideal weather for keeping white worms. If you live in a hot environment there are a few easy tricks to help lower culture temperatures.

Method 1: Because white worm cultures are wet they are naturally cool. During extended periods of hot weather fully saturate a culture for the cooling effect of evaporating water. Add a fan that blows across the medium for a swamp-cooler effect.

Method 2: Place a kitchen cooling plate under the culture, or place the culture on a cool slab of concrete for the same effect.

Method 3: Wrap aluminum foil around a cold water line and set your culture on it.

Culture Invaders / Mites:
This is another topic with a lot of confusing dialogue. Worm cultures are highly organic and it is near impossible to keep invaders out. Keep in mind, most invaders are not likely predatory even if they look scary. Most invaders are more interested in naturally deceased worms, waste, the food you provide your worms, etc, etc, etc, over fighting with a live worm many times its size.

Here are a couple techniques to deal with culture invaders:

Method 1: When you tap on a culture the worms will retreat deep into the medium. Remove the top layer of medium and place it outside where the invaders will wander off.

Method 2: Because white worms are near semi-aquatic flooding their culture does not bother them. After being flooded the worms and medium sink, while the invaders float to the surface. Blow them off the surface and drain the culture.

Method 3: This may sound barbaric but also works great. Tap the culture to drive the worms deeper into the soil. Then, use a hand-held blow-torch with an airy flame to brush over the surface. The invaders get toasted while the white worms are safe in the medium.

Harvesting:
Place a plastic container lid over their food and the worms will crawl onto it. Dip that directly into your fish tanks.

INSTRUCTIONS AFTER RECEIVING PACKAGE:
You will receive enough culture to completely fill 2-3 sandwich sized containers, but we recommend using something taller to prevent the worms from crawling out. Poke a few holes in the lid.

During shipping, to prevent the medium from leaking to the box- we reduce its moisture content. When in their new container add a cup or two of aged water.

Add a wet piece of bread about the size of your thumb-nail. If ignored it is because the worms are consuming older food as they tend to like the old stuff better.

Place your new culture in a cool location.
