Adult Rainbow Cichlids, 1 Male & 1 Female, Herotilapia multispinosa Typical Female, 9/25 � Typical Male, 9/25 � These looked great before I tried to catch them. But that's why they call them rainbows I guess. These are adult fish of breeding age, some have spawned. You will get one male and one female. These fish pair VERY easily. I sold male/female sets of barely sexable fish to three people this spring. All later told me they had the fish spawn in under a month. These are more mature so I doubt it will take that long. I have always had these fish pair up until no more pairs could form. I'll tell you what, if they do not spawn in 2 months, I will exchange them. Below are the unrelated parents and below that is a more golden uncle (mother's brother) to give you an idea what they look like when not scared or breeding. These are slightly more orange. � � � � They have very docile personalities for cichlids. They don't go on a murderous rampage if they spawn in a large community tank. The parents may squabble but no domestic abuse. I have never been attacked when I put my hand in while they had fry. You could keep a couple of pairs in a heavily planted 55 gallon and they might even be able to raise fry. Minumum tank size for a pair is 30" long (29G) and for two pairs 48" (55G). For the fish to be comfortable they like a planted tank with place to hide. I don't find them to be shy at all but they seem to like options, be able to hide if they get scared. Dither fish are not needed but the rainbows do tend to stay in the mid to lower levels. A smaller top dwelling fish is a good companion. I would not put rainbows with other cichlids. A much better choice would be something like swordtails. Few fish are as tolerant of changing conditions as the rainbow cichlid. They handle temps in the 80s down to the 60s. Hard water soft water, acid or alkaline. I keep them in medium hard water, neutral to slightly alkaline and temps in the mid 70s. They are omnivorous but MUST have some form of veggie in their diet. Veggie flakes, veggie sticks, duckweed, cooked collards or algae will all do the trick. Again, absolute minimum tank size is 30" long (29 gallon), for two pairs it's 48" (55 gallon).
