Shipping for this item is 4.00 only 10 cent bid increments no reserve Hair Algae!!!! I have a use for it. While most people hate hair algae and spend money eliminating it... I embrace it. What it does in my aquariums... 1. Helps to eliminate excess nutrients in the water. (hence why it grows in the first place. I just leave it. removing excess of course.) 2. Provides infusoria and cover for fish fry. (i breed fish. so this is a good thing.) 3. Provides breeding grounds for scuds and snails and blackworms. (I keep live food cultures for my fish that I breed, so breeding grounds and free food source for my fish food is awesome.) 4. Some fish eat Hair Algae such as the Florida Flag Fish. Hair Algae be easily harvested for snails and scuds and infusoria. If you dont want it in your tank you can just place it in one of those plastic dollar store shoe boxes in water and keep it in the dark. the hair algae will melt back over time and leave you with snails and scuds. and if you added worms, them too. I have tons of fish. some inside, some outside. I have noticed that i get more, bigger fry faster with hair algae in the tanks. This was first noticed when I realized the 10 gallon tank in the window was our best producer of livebearers, and mystery snails. It was our most neglected tank just because it was hard to get to we could barely ever see into it with all the algae, but whenever we cleaned the glass, the water was always sparkling clear so we left it alone. We had originally 12 fish in there... mollies and plattys. I know... overpopulation right? That aside, When we went to reset the tank we pulled out so many babies and baby snails it was crazy. I lost count around 50 fish fry but there were more than that. we are talking more than 60 fish and a carpet of mystery snail babies all in a 10 gallon tank that was sitting in full sun in a window last summer full of hair algae and glass fuzz. I do have to say this... I keep scuds. They are little freshwater crustaceans that live on decomposing matter... fish poo, plant decay, animal decay, etc. they are scavengers. but they also love veggies. Hair algae gives these guys a place to breed... the denser the better. yarn mops work good too. its all about surface area... scuds are a great addition to the aquarium as they are a part of natures clean u crew, and... fish like to eat them. win win. I prefer hair algae over spawning mops for the growth of scuds as hair algae also plays host to many micro organisms that fish fry can see and eat as first foods. So, how do I use Hair algae? When I have a batch of new fry, Live bearers, and egg layers alike, I add in a bunch of hair algae. The newly free swimming fry go right for it and start munching on stuff I cannot see. As they grow, the will start eating scud babies and whatever foods you give them... Just insurance that your fish will have plenty to eat as they grow. My Hair algae also contains a mix of pond snails, and ramshorn snails that act as tank cleaners and clean up after any excess food and unfortunately and fry that have perished thus helping to preserve water quality, as is the hair algae before it melts back or is eaten by the ramshorn snails. It really is a complete ecosystem that only benefits your fish fry.
