Description

Daphnia Magna

Also known as water fleas, these are an easy live food for most adult fish. Daphnia are filter feeders which means they filter microscopic organisms like bacteria, yeast, and algae out of the water for food. Daphnia are also great when you have an unexpected bacteria or algae bloom as they will filter the excess bacteria and algae provided they have sufficient oxygen.

You will receive at least (usually much more) 100 medium to large daphnia in a breather bag which may also have pond snails and duckweed. I will ship your daphnia USPS priority mail, packed in a small box. Shipping will be $6 and is added to the price of the auction. If you win multiple auctions from me I will combine the orders and email you the new shipping cost.

I also have microworms, walterworms, vinegar eels, skuds, flour beetles, pink and red ramshorn snails, and trumpet snails. If I don't have an auction posted, email me.

Care

Daphnia are fairly easy to care for and just as easy to kill. They are very sensitive to chemicals in the water, so they need water that has been carefully treated to ensure there is no chlorine. Using spring water or collecting rainwater is often recommended. Once a culture is established you can experiment with using water filters, water treatments and letting water sit to see what works best for you.

Daphnia need a certain amount of calcium to form their shells so if your water is soft you should add eggshell or sea shells to the water.

You can feed daphnia algae by growing algae in an outdoor tank using fertilizer like miracle grow to encourage growth, or throwing in a few goldfish to create the fertilizer or a little of both. Once you have your algae bloom, replace a portion of the water in your daphnia container with the algae water. You can feed yeast by mixing a pinch of bakers yeast in some water and mixing it into the daphnia tank. You can feed them bacteria, just add something that rots to some water and feed them the water. Be careful about adding too much rotting stuff in the daphnia tank because the bacteria will use up the oxygen and your daphnia will die. Also be careful with bubblers, because the air can get trapped under their shells and they can't swim.
