Culturing Instructions:

Springtails(Colombella)are tiny little grayish-white insects that have no wings. They have fork like appendages that allow them to jump. When the cover is removed from their container, they will retreat into a dark space, usually back into the soil. They have been known to be a pest to Grindal Worms, White Worms and Red Worms. It's important to keepthem apart. They do not bite and will die if their conditions are too damp or too dry.
Which Fish Will Eat Them : Sub-adults like Gouramis, Bubble Nesting Bettas, Apistogrammas, Epilaty Killifish, Corydoras, White Clouds.
Environment: Select a dark area in your room to keep your culturing container.
Temperature: Room temperature.
Food: You can feed finely ground dried cat food, instant baby cereal (oatmeal), instant mashed potato flakes (plain), fish food flakes andwhite bread. Thee foods must be moist when feeding. I like to bury the food under the medium and turn the medium every 5-7 days.
Container: Choose anheavy dutycontainer with a secure lid. You'll need to make tiny air holes on the upper sides of your container so that your culture can breathe.
Medium: There are many mediums that can be used. I prefer a worm bedding that doesn't contain soil/ dirt because soil quickly sours and turns to mud. You may also use coconut fibre (coir), top soil, charcoal bitsetc
Harvesting:I like to wait until hundreds of Springtails are congregating around a clump of food. I'll take a portion cup, scoop a clump of food into the portion cup and gently tap the cup. The Springtails will fall to the bottom of the cup. Then I'll place the clump of food back into the medium. Then I will collect as many as I want and leave the ones that I don't need.I can feed theSpringtails to my fish.

Sub-Culturing: It's best to start a new culture every 2- 3 weeks. Prepare your new medium and add part of your old culture to the new one.
Helpful Hints:
If your culture starts to smell bad, immediately start a new by taking about a dozen hand picked Springtails. Start off in a small container.
If your culture becomes to soggy, add dry medium orstart a new one if theSpringtails have started dying. You want a moist culture, not soggy or damp.
Use clear/see-through containers so that you can easily check the status of your culture without having to open the lid.
It's best to keep more that one container ofSpringtails going just in case one goes bad.
