About Poey

As a kid growing up in the Midwest, I was blessed to have a drainage 'ditch' at the far end of our family property. One hundred feet long, five feet wide and two feet deep, my ditch was teeming with crayfish, frogs and tadpoles from April through August! Winter snow melt and Spring rains kept the water level fairly constant until very late Summer when the ditch dried up.....only to repeat the cycle the following Spring. One dip of my window-screen make-shift 'net' would harvest scores of crayfish of all sizes. Catching the frogs and tadpoles required a little more patience but I honed my skills with daily practice! This was the beginning of the aquarium hobby for me, so many years ago. Since those early days, I can't remember a time when I didn't have at least one or two tanks set up. Today, some fifty years later, still a kid at heart, my aquarium interest is centered around extinct (in the wild), endangered, or threatened live bearing fishes. My tanks are bare-bottom, single specie, heavily planted aquariums utilizing sponge filtration. The old saying rings so true for me: 'too many fish - not enough tanks'. So, I'm always looking for a 'new' fish challenge (new to me), while usually phasing out a specie that I've kept for some time. Through local fish auctions and on-line auctions, I greatly enjoy sharing my surplus fish and live plants with others. I hope to hear your story sometime.
